Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, All Herding breeds, Tell Me About Yours

Those retractable leashes TEACH the dog to pull!
Don't get me started on all the cute harnesses either, especially on large dogs. Unless they are hitched to a wagon.

Yeah it’s ridiculous! But my biggest thing is the owners that use those leashes pay zero attention to the dog at the end of it!!

And yeah the harnesses are pretty ridiculous too. Although I don’t think harnesses and collars and stuff necessarily need to be ugly to be effective and it’s cool people can accessorize or whatever BUT most of those things are such terrible quality and not safe. Especially on large dogs like you said. There are good quality harnesses that come in cool colors or whatever but most people don’t know about those and just buy some cutesy thing at Petco or something that’s gonna break the second the dog lunges or pulls.

Random question... do you think a Border Collie could or would herd other dogs back if they didn’t recall when asked? :lau

Was just something I was thinking about.

I know they are big rule followers and super smart so I thought maybe they would decide to round everybody up on their own or possibly even be trained to. Was just wondering.

Course they’d all be trained to come back but I’m just curious and was thinking about it just like in general if they are big rule enforcers. :lau

I know some English Shepherds can be lol

I love my Boston terrier mixes, so maybe you are correct I'm getting into that age bracket where a border collie will be too much. The mind is willing, but the body is a bit weaker these days.

I was in my 20's when I had my last one. Now in my 50's with multiple joint and arthritis issues I probably should aim a bit lower.

Boston terrier are a really great dog. I'd get another but we got two in our bed, and they fight over positions on the couch. Our hearts have room, our furniture probably not, but you never know with me. :) I seem to have my favorite breeds, boxers, Aussies, Boston's, and rat terrier.

Not trying to talk you out of them at all... most of it is in the raising and handling the behaviors. I’m certain you can deal with them, if you want to take it on again. I take some issues with the way the dogs here behave. I prefer a little more formal obedience as well as the intuitive (on the dog’s part) approach. And I am a huge fan of Cesar Milan’s methods. The Farm here has had border collies exclusively since the mid to late 80’s. And they are wonderful dogs. My Husband has most of the older stories on the dogs before we moved here. They have been mostly a positive thing, though for actual herding a little more formal training wouldn’t hurt either.

My Father (just turned 65) recently tried to adopt a German Shepard cross puppy from the local SPCA. He ended up returning her, not that she wasn’t a good dog, and she didn’t have any major behavior issues. He just realized that at that point in his life it wasn’t a good fit for him. Energy, health, and time wise. They ended up getting an older Boston Terrier, and he has a Malmute that occasionally visits for more high energy days. “I’ve got to go... have to walk the ‘puppy’, this dog is going to kill me!” (With the exercise he means, and it’s good for him ;))

You reminded me of rat terriers. I had forgotten I wanted one of those too haha they seem great.

They are also a bit busy with wanting to hunt, so I'm not sure if I will get another down the road. Boston, and Boston mixes have stolen my heart in the little dog department. :)

That’s a good point. I think I would like that though because we have soooo many chipmunks and squirrels lol and I think we have rats around but idk. Need them to get rid of the rats and chipmunks. :lau

Boston’s seem like a great choice though. :)

I also really like Havanese
