Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, All Herding breeds, Tell Me About Yours

I teach mouthy puppies to play with me with a toy only. They start biting, I get a toy and get them to play by wiggling it on the ground like a injured bunny. If they play toy, we play. If they launch at my flesh, I put them away (into a crate or behind a gate) for a few minutes. Then I offer the toy again.

You want to play? We play with toys, not flesh. If you don't want a toy, fine, I am not going to play or give you access to my skin.

Pretty quick they figure it out and start shoving toys at you instead of biting most of the time. Try it and see if it helps?
Thanks for your advice. I will have to get more assertive & give her the time out routine like you suggest. She doesn't do it with my other half, but then I suppose he's the Alpha Male. Apart from the mouthing and chewing me she's really a good dog.

She's very talkative, grumbling & making growling noises but not in a nasty way, I think it's just her way of communicating. She looks straight at me & barks once & I know she needs to go outside. I just can't stop her from chewing on me, it doesn't hurt, I've tried everything from giving her toys to a firm "No" but it's all a game to her. Hope she stop before her adult teeth come through.
I love talkative dogs. They are always so much fun to interact with.

I do it this way too. I start on day one. Most get it pretty quickly and others take a while. :)

Lisa has lots of experience with dogs. It's not a training lesson she needs but a breed profile she is wanting..:thumbsup
I don't mind talking training. It's interesting to read how others do stuff to me. Any dog talk is good talk to me.

Well, as my husband likes to remind me "puppies are jerks." :D They grow up!

The whole grabbing everything with their mouth is mostly a developmental stage that they grow out of.

She's darling.:love
I like dogs. Puppies can be a pain. I'm always glad when I get them raised up so I can stop watching their every move.

Agreed. And yeah, I don’t really think it’s that she’s trying to dominate or be the boss or anything. She’s a baby and her teeth hurt and she’s probably at the stage where they’re getting ready to fall out soon and hurt even more. If anything, it’s probably cause he is maybe more assertive with her. Dogs in general are smart and can figure out exactly what they can get away with and with who. I imagine that is magnified in Border Collies. She’s figured out she can do this. I agree with crating/isolating her. I was going to suggest that. If nothing else works then trying putting her away. Or even just walking out of the room. Though putting her away is probably better. Might be the only way she will get it if nothing else has worked. But she will get it eventually. She’s a baby. Even though she may look full grown, dogs stay babies for a long time.

Boxers are babies for about 6 years. :). They can be a challenge sometimes when younger. Good thing they are so good looking and sweet.
