Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, All Herding breeds, Tell Me About Yours

Heelers seem like great dogs and I’d love one eventually but I’ve heard they can be pretty dominant and sometimes aggressive. Makes me nervous to get one. They seem like great dogs with the right owners though but I’ve known so several aggressive ones either with other dogs or people or both.

Defiantly can be aggressive and bossy dogs...

So one question is you said bossy. Bossy is one reason I wasn't considering another Aussie. They are so bossy. But if a border in general is bossy too than I'm back to the same issues.

My Aussies are bossy, wicked smart with a hilarious sense of humor. They are Velcro dogs. They don't have the need to work like a border collie does. It's the main reason I switched to Aussies. Now you have me rethinking it all. I guess in the end I will get one of the two.

You have given me loads to think about. I really appreciate it. And your dog really was gorgeous.

Thank you, yes she was. I think that it's just the herding instinct that makes them bossy so all herders have it to some degree. BC's are the king of the herders.

Perhaps I will have to consider an Aussie as for me as I get older I wonder how much work I want to put into any future dog and how much time I want to spend keeping it engaged. One that didn't need quite so much to do might be nice. But once you've had any one of these smarty pants breeds it's kinda hard not to think all other dogs are a bit dull

An Aussie might be a good fit for you. They are smart too, but have a sense of humor, so probably a similar breed. Definitely not up to par with a border collie. They are very intelligent.

that last sentence is so true!!! I even see it with my brother’s dogs. Libby is sooooo smart as was my last dog, Gator. Franklin is.... well.... he’s sweet and well behaved at least

I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s stupid and he’s a bit anxious and ADD so that might be part of it but he just doesn’t have the super smarts like Libby and Gator. The thinking about and challenging everything and trying to see what they can get away with and exactly where the limits are. Always testing the limits and manipulating people LOL and I swear they understand every word spoken and I used to negotiate with Gator you would a kid LOL

Franklin is super cuddly at least but not the brightest bulb lol

There are a lot of coat types in both breeds. My one current Aussie is show bred and has a very thick coat which I shave down because she gets so hot otherwise and puffs like a freight train at night. A working type Aussie like the one I lost was much lighter and manageable to me. They do shed quite a bit at times, but I can deal with that.

See that is where people make the boo boo those coats that are so thick are double harsher outer soft under shaving is not good it protects from heat and cold your think you help sorry my soapbox is broad.. only coat gets softer as you clip so more prone to mats in later years I know this Master groomer
