Bored Chickens? Try this!

Love it!

We chopped up worms today into smaller bites for my 3 week old chicks. This sounds like fun for my older hens. My 7yr old boy would get a kick out of it too! Nobody in town sells cricketts for fish bait and the nearest pet shop is 60 miles away. The bait stores do sell minnows, maybe they would work as good as goldfish? We shall see!

I've got an ornamental pond in the backyard that mine drink from and I am always looking for ways to get rid of goldfish because they reproduce at an alarming rate. I did think of feeding them to the hens but I read somewhere that fish might make the eggs taste fishy...did you notice anything like that? I'd think 25 goldfish would be a lot, at least for the 4 I have. I wouldn't want fishy eggs. Anyone "taste" fish in the eggs when you do this?

Mine aren't laying yet. They are just spoiled freeloaders at this point. Yet they provide much amusement for our family! Fish taste is something to consider however.

Nah, those fish for destined for somebody's turtle or larger fish anyway. Also they were one bite fish. Larger fish yes, as it would take many bites to finish them off and they would suffer before dying.

Hmmm...DS said this spring we'll catch minnows in the stream and do the same thing! Cheaper and abundant.

Thanks for the idea|!

i have a bait store down the street who's owners love to feed their cats my eggs so we swap our eggs for minnows! the girls love it! they look like over grown penguins! it is a riot to watch!
