I do, quite often, in CA. Generally, if you and your neighbors aren't offering them an easy food source or a comfy place to raise their young, they will move on. Opossums I worry about because of horses and EPM, and skunks are generally placcid fellows but are big rabies vectors in CA and are stinky even when they don't spray. So I prefer to not have any of them living on my property by keeping all my food inside and garbage in raccoon-safe bins.

Feeding cats outside and easy access to garbage are the biggest lures for raccoons.

No cats here, trouble coons get scent of the birds. Coons carry rabies just as much as skunks. No horse here so give me possum any day over coons. NOT MUCH will keep coons out of a pen, they will rip wire from post. over ,under or thru a fence. Yep got lots of places for them to raise young 40 acrea of woods with creek running thru it. But those that come to feed on by birds or eggs, dont live long. Anyway lot easier to keep skunks or possum out than the Raccoons

Hmm maybe this Raccoon has already been re-located to your house and is trap-wise......... yep The old triple S method works best for me 2 this week for a total of 9 this year all of them trying to get an easy meal of dog food......... That is what I bait the trap with.

We recently had a coon come into the horse barn and feed with the kittens.

It really was not a problem as we were "diversion" feeding and the thing stayed away from the chickens.

However, it started to get into everything in the horse barn and became rather destructive so we trapped the poor thing.

The wife would NOT let me "dispatch" the thing. Oh, it was a very pretty coon and not aggressive at all.

I have a freind that took the thing. He is presently mounted and the wife was promised the coon would be humanly done.

There are many people that do mount coons and this may be a outlet for you. Check your local taxidermy shops. A mounted coon can bring a fair price and the shop owner may be willing to take your animal.

I think so too, she's backed up to a huge wildlife preserve in the mountains, my bet is is was driven up from around beverly hills (straight shot).

I agree with Ladyhawke.

Can we help you with suggestions to strengthen your coop? If they can't get in, then you won't have to worry [as much] about trapping.

Well, I'm a live and let live kinda guy. The only time critters are in danger from me is when they go after my livestock. As long as they leave them alone, they are fine, unless they are tasty rabbits. I figure they've got as much right to be here as I do. I'm not quite clear on what is irresponsible about that.

Certainly can't be worse than SSS, ethically speaking.

Call Critter Busters (If in California). They charge a small fee to pickup animals you catch in your own trap and euthanize them.
