BOSS linked to egg production??

I gave my chickies BOSS for the first time ever yesterday, just a bag I picked up at TSC (my first TSC btw, ever!) My older hen went nuts and did her happy cluck, that I normally only get when I give her meal worms. But the kicker is, my menopausal-hasn't-laid-an-egg-in-years hen, LAID AN EGG LAST NIGHT. What?! Could it have been the BOSS??

I don't know if it would happen that quickly as the egg cycle is longer than that, but I know people that swear by BOSS for increasing egg production due to the extra protein.

Yay for new eggs!

Black Oil Sunflower Seed (BOSS) is only around 16% protein so unless you are feeding a feed that is less than 16% protein it will not increase the protein of your feed in fact you would be depleting the protein..
Don get me wrong BOSS is a great feed additive for increasing oil in there feed (hence the name Black Oil Sunflower Seed) but its not going to do much for protein...

It is a good treat for them, much better than traditional scratch for both the oil and the fact that it has a much higher protein content than the scratch of corn, wheat and oats. Good stuff, my girls get it daily!

It can make scratch more nutricious and act as a bridge when you run out of regular feed before getting the next bag. It should not be a replacement for feed for more than a few days at most.

Anyway, what else would they eat in the dugout during baseball games?

I throw my chickens some BOSS mixed with scratch (about 50/50) and they have laid great all winter, even my older girls. Who knows if it is because of BOSS. I will definitely keep feeding it though, they just love it.
