Both my ducks have been panting unless in the pool.

I keep my 4 wk Perkins in the garage in a brooder and today they started panting quite a bit through out the day so I figured they were hot and let them swim a few times and dry in the yard. I left for about 3 hours and they were in their brooder still panting. I did change their water feeder from the ones you can buy for ducks or chickens and put a Tupperware that I had cut part of the top from so they could still fit their beaks in.. Well I was just about to go to bed and they were panting again. It is pretty warm in this garage so I decided I'll bring out the old water feeder because they don't really like to stand up and drink they like it at head level and see if that helps. Luckily they started drinking and eating and seem to be better for time being. Do you think it was the change of water feeder? It's prob about 70-75 in this garage.

This was the water feeder I made thinking it wouldn't be as messy and I saw on this site but they didn't drink as much.

And this is the older one I brought back in that they just started guzzling water from. I filled this just a few secs ago and it's already almost gone.

I think you have your answer right there. I'm new to ducks (have 4 Anconas 8 weeks old) and now have two large waterers. I keep one in the duck house and manage to keep the mud to a minimum but putting down a layer of small stone and a paving stone. The straw bedding also absorbs the water. I "muck out" the house every morning and toss it on the compost heap.

I read Pekins run hot and I was wondering if they'd benefit from those cooling dog mats.

Aww, poor warm babies...that brooder box is positively tiny compared to those duckies hun, how often do you let them out to run around, stretch their legs and cool off? It's been a scorcher of a summer so far, so they definitely need to get a good dunk in more often than not.

They also don't seem to be able to blow out their nares in that shallow tupperware dish so it could be a simple matter of their sinuses being plugged, do you have a large dog bowl or ramekin to give to them instead?

Agreed, that waterer is far too small.

I would encourage you to get the rabbit cage from tractor supply. For 2 duck the 30x30 would work as a brooder in hot weather for another 3-5 weeks. I left the top open on mine to make cleaning easy and used painters tape to make a poo shield. I gave it feet and used the tray underneath. they quickly adapted to the girll under their feet.

I let them out 2-3 times a day in pool and yard about an hour at a time. I do need to upgrade for sure. I wanna get then outside soon!

They are able to stretch their wings but if I should move them I will. They grew so fast over the week and half.
