Bottle goat questions, please.....

If cocci is in your area, I would treat everyone with Albon (get it from your bet). It's cheap insurance. However, in Texas, I have no idea if it's a problem like it is here in wet Washington.

Another good point was brought up, I have to deworm by goats and lambs about 4 times in the first 6 months. They're very susceptible at that early age; but tend to build up good resistance as long as you can get them "over the hump".

Goats and any goats always have some cocci but you have to keep it under control I use DiMethox 40 % to treat mine. I get it at Jefferslivestock.com not to expensive either also you can use Sulmet 12.5 to treat also and most farm stores carry it. Any kind of stress can bring on Cocci and it can be lethal. That is what the CD/T shots help prevent. but hey can still get it if really stressed like kidding or moving around. Good luck

Chaty, I don't believe C/D & T does anything for cocci. I had been wrongly informed early on that it did help with cocci, and then was corrected. It's just for overeating disease and tetnus.

I was going to bring up the bit that ALL goats (unless in a treated, tested free herd) will carry cocci. It's in the soil. We had an outbreak in a couple kids last winter when we went from drought to flood - wet conditions 'activate' them in the soil. Usually, adults aren't affected (unless, like Chaty mentioned, they're stressed) but it's deadly for kids.

My bad ...thanks Kate I was in need of a nap...been lots going on here...Yep Kate is right
Some albon is put into the water and sometimes they wont drink its easier just to treat with meds that are given orally. Then you know they have been treated.

Girl - a lot going on is putting it VERY lightly - take care of yourself

There is no vaccine for coccidiossis, except one for poultry... which in clinical trials was pretty dubious. But since people who are going organic are allowed to vaccinate, but not medicate, the vaccine was rushed to the market for poultry people.

I sure wish their was a vaccine, though. But, it's just like asking for a vaccine for flukes or worms. They're parasistes, not infections or diseases.

Either Sulmet 12.5 or DiMethox 40% the DiMethox looks like its a injectable but it is drawn up in a syringe and given by mouth for 14 days. Thats what I do and that is what I have used as sometimes the sulmet isnt stronge enough...
