Botulism

I have a worm bin which they get into (it's just a raised bed). We've been eating a lot of watermelon, which as lots of water and it might have made the bin anaerobic, which is just the thing for the Botulism C spores.

If it has been really hot and dry, an unnoticed mud puddle might possibly be the culprit? Would be good to know, though, and keep them away from the source.

For your duck to get botulism I think they would have to have access to stagnant water, compost pile, or a rotting carcass.

They did have access to the worm bin. They might have also had access to stagnant water one morning when I didn't clear out a bowl of water I had for them and they got to it before I could dump the water out.

I guess it's possible. Maybe do like @Amiga suggested and try the activated charcoal, 'cause I don't think that can hurt. If your duck does die, may I suggest that you send her to UC Davis for a necropsy? Necropsies are only $20 for California residents and I think it would be good for you to know.

Ignore that last question. I don't know how I responded to myself. I meant to ask a question regarding the tube feeding post because I couldn't find it.

Can you give us more details about the duck you took to the vet and what the vet prescribed?

Any chance you could take your duck to a different vet?

Believe it or not, there is not a plethora of poultry vets in the Bay Area. The ones I've been to so far have not seemed all that knowledgeable. The first one I went to asked me if my runner duck always stood like that. I knew I was in trouble when he said that.

There’s one a couple of hours from you, in Oakdale. She did surgery on my injured bird, and she’s a healthy and happy hen now.

The Oakley Pet Hospital? Yes, I plan on seeing if I can get an appointment there. They don't do emergency visits, so I'll have to see if I can get an appointment tomorrow. I was hoping to do something in the meantime.
