I'm a total noob to raising yard birds and bought our first chicks today. I had built a coop and was expecting to buy some older pullets, but when the wife and I got to the feed store, all they had left were young chicks. So without much forethought, we had to improvise a temporary brooder when we got home. We purchased two each of Amerucauna, Barred Rock, Production Reds and three Buff Orpingtons for a total of nine chicks. I'm thinking of building a temporary brooder in my coop to get the new chicks off our sun porch.
We live in SE Louisiana and enjoy our vegetable garden and citrus trees. We have decided to raise laying hens for fun and food. We have enough property that we can do some free ranging when the chicks grow up some, perhaps with a portable enclosure. The current coop is 6' x 12' with a second level roosting area and nesting boxes.

So glad you could join BYC! Congratulations on buying your first chicks. Bringing home new babies can be so exciting! You've picked out some excellent breeds. All four breeds should be very good layers (you'll get lovely green eggs from the Americanas) and should have docile temperaments, too. Sounds like you've built a nice coop for your chickens! A lot of people build coops that are too small, but your coop has more than enough space. I'm sure your chickens will greatly enjoy it!

Welcome to our flock and I hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We'll be happy to help.

Thanks all for the warm welcome to BYC! I'm sure I'll have many questions in the near future. At this point I "don't know what I don't know" and will need to do some browsing of all the info on this site to be able to formulate my questions. Thanks again!
