Hi, I bought some wood pellet bedding in 40 lb. bags, the pellets are pretty good-sized so I don't think there will be any problems with them being eaten but it has an odor, is that going to bother my chicks?

I'm paranoid to use it now! It doesn't say anything about bird bedding just animal and reptile. It said for large animals to wet it and fluff it up but no need for use with the small animal. Can you please shed some light on this for me, I sure would appreciate it!!!

Thankyou!

I use the wood pellet bedding and LOVE IT! Woody Pet has the directions as to what to do. I used it for the winter and had great results. Cleaned it in the Spring. There is no smell and my birds seem to like it I did add the watera and it is better as it is more absorbant. I think if you look on the Woody Pet website it may have directions for chickens. I use it for my rabbit too:cool:

The brand I have is Marth wood pellets. On the bag is says animal and reptile bedding but nothing about birds. I put it in their brooder and I thought they were going to fly out in all directions I tried to talk to them and push it around slowly but it didn't help at all. Do you think it makes a difference the brand it's not Woody pet, I mean they are wood pellets right?

I noticed some of the chicks were pecking at it what if they should eat some of it? Help I'm kinda worried here!

The wood pellets do have a woody smell just like the pine shavings but that smell gets less and less after their out of the bag.

I don't wet mine down. Never did when I used them in my horse stalls nor the banty brooder. They will break down a little from moist poo.

I'm loving the wood pellets in the brooder after using pine and aspin shavings in the standard chicks brooder.

They smell better I think. Dry up the poo within minutes. Very little dust and they don't get kicked up in the food or water as easily.

Do not worry about the brand of wood pellets. They are all the same except type of wood used to make them. Chicks will get used to them fast. Mine pick at them all the time I am sure mine have even eaten the broken down pellets which is sawdust. When the pellets get wet they break down to saw dust and this the chicks might eat but it passes right thru them. I have seen mine poop a light tan poop which I believe is the saw dust. Mine are growing great and I have no problems with them on the pellets. I do stir them up a couple times week to make sure poop goes beneath the pellets. Other than that no maintance.
