Abcess is the best news! The farrier can take a good look at it on Friday, too, as he will have seen lots of these in his career. They are very painful but generally the least worrisome of all the options of what it could've been. Whew.

Had a mare in my care years ago who came up three-legged lame suddenly. She was pastured with a couple other broodmares in a run-in shed for the summer. We were sure she had fractured something, she was in so much pain, and had been absolutely fine the day before. No swelling or temperature, either.

The horse vets were two hours' drive away and very busy that day, so we put her on the trailer and brought her in for x-rays....only a portable machine was available, and this was 20 years ago. Who knows how old the x-ray machine was, but it showed nothing. All we could do was bring her home and wait and see what other symptoms showed up.

As she was going up the ramp into the trailer, she fussed and knocked her hoof against the edge of the ramp. The phantom abcess burst and pus came out of her coronary band! It took some months for it to grow out, but she was absolutely fine once the pressure was relieved. She wasn't the only one who was relieved!

Thank you all, again. Yes, it is very good news and I'm very relieved. Still have to leave tonight and be gone most of tomorrow, but my mom said she thought she would be able to soak her foot in the morning for me. I'll give her (the horse, not my mom) the meds in the evening before I leave so my mom won't have to worry about that. I'm planning on leaving the easy boot off until I return, as she has never had one on before and I want to be around to keep an eye on things. I am so very relieved; I needed some kind of good news regarding my animals. Have had a very rough last few months, having lost two dogs and two cats, after big vet bills with each. They were all between 14 - 17 years old, and we knew the time was going to be coming, but to have them all go so closely together has just left me numb. Then to have this happen - yikes! More vet bills and who know what kind of outcome. Thankfully, not anywhere near as bad as what my mind was creating!

Oh, what a great idea....give meds to MOM so she will help with the horse! Wish I'd thought of that years ago!

Oh, that's great news! I should have thought of that! (Abscess, I mean.) Yeah they're painful until they drain but they're pretty uneventful and I'm sure she'll be just fine.

Hey Lizardz, how's it going? I was thinking about your mare today... one of my TBs is having his near-annual "ground has frozen into hard points" abscess and I was out there soaking and poulticing this afternoon

Hi Everyone,
Just an update. My mare seems to be doing well, although the soaking went much less than well. She just wasn't real keen on the idea, to understate the situation. Stupid thing will stand for hours in the irrigation ditch, but not 10 minutes in a rubber bucket

Resorted to soaking towels, wrapping her foot, then taping a plastic bag over it all. Yeah, that was fun, too, but worked better than the bucket. To complete the picture, add doing it in a dark barn while wearing a headlamp! Oh, the fun that was had.

The farrier came on Friday and we decided to put shoes on her to get her soles off the ground. She did amazingly well with that, especially since her foot was still sore and she has never been shod before. Took her some time to get used to that, but today she seemed like she had adjusted. We're done with the antibiotics, so now we'll just wait and see what happens. Patandchickens, hope things go well for you and your boy is healed up soon. Again, thanks for the thoughts and advice.
