Boxer Owners with Chicks?

It is awesome that there are so many boxer owners here!

I really was wondering if I was totally crazy for trying to introduce chicks with two boxers in the house!

When I read that you only had two boxers I had to laugh - I told DH and says " what ONLY two ?? " LOL

I am glad there are so many people who are owned by a boxer they are great dogs, just not sure they are all that great with farm type animals - my boxers love to sit at the windows and watch the chickens - I guess it is " dog TV " they can see right down in the run - most likely thinking " how in the world do I open this darn window?? " or " I thought this was a drive through ?? "

Our Boxer is a rescue, and he has to be the dumbest boxer on the planet.

We love him dearly, tho'. He is an inside dog, and I do not, under any circumstances let him alone near the chickens. If he is not on the run, he is in the kennel when we are outside.

He was aggressive towards my big BO roo, and the roo flogged him. Now he steers clear of the roos, but is WAY too intensely interested in the hens.

He looks at our hens they way my Grandfather's bird dogs looked at ducks.

Every dog is different, but dogs are dogs. I have had too many close run ins with strays to trust any dog around my flock.

We have 2 Boxers, an English Bulldog and 3 LGDs (Maremma X Pyrenees). We adore our Boxers but they were a disaster with chickens when they were younger. They are almost 8 years old now and can be trusted with the chickens. IMO, everything exists to be a toy for Boxers. They are happy, loving, lovable dogs and we have always loved the breed but I prefer to keep them away from the chickens. They stay big goofy puppies for many years. Ours are pampered house dogs and they do fine with cows, calves, sheep and lambs but it is hard for them to resist chasing anything that runs or flies. They chase the cats if they run but never harm them. I had a female Boxer that was the best mouser I have ever seen. She was very obedient but she would have gotten the chickens in a minute and she hated cats. The Boxers are training the LGDs to guard the farm from 2 legged predators while they are watching out for mountain lions, coyotes and bears.

Boxers are wonderful family dogs and they have the heart of a guardian.They love babies of any kind including baby chicks. They are descended from hunting dogs and when something runs they want to go after it and they generally catch it.

After re-reading my post, it seems harsh. Sorry about that. We love our boxer dearly. He's a rescue, was starved and physically abused, and he's just not too bright. Sometimes he gets down under the kitchen table to lay under the chairs, and when he wakes up, can't get himself orientated to get out correctly and ends up panicking. Let me tell you, a 62 pound boxer in a dead panic under a table thrashing around hardwood chairs is no fun. Our vet feels he's a bit retarded or brain damaged.

I trust him 100% with our children, he's a excellent house dog. He is just past a year old and is a humongous "puppy".

If he does get off collar, he will and does go right after the chickens. He's a big galoot, and has knocked me down while playing, so even if he was playing, the chickens would be done for.

We got Tank from a man that said that he "loved" him but just couldn't keep him anymore. Tank was 11 months old. We took him to our vet the day after we adopted him to make sure he was healthy and besides worms from fleas he was a healthy 11 month old puppy!

The first night we had him we knew the guy lied about him being an indoor dog. He peed on our couch! Lifted his leg and just peed. It was the first time Gary (Dh) raised his voice to him and just said No No outside Tank and Tank dropped to the floor in a panic and thought that Gary was going to hit him. It was so sad!! Tank is a HUGE love! We had our 3rd baby 2 weeks after we got Tank and Tank was WONDERFUL with him. We knew Tank was going to fit in his wonderfully. He loves his cats but does not care for others.

Funny enough we will probably have another puppy boxer before the end of the year because we LOVE the breed but we will be under NO circumstances leaving the dogs with the chickens. It is hard for me to take my eyes off my babies for 2 mins let alone take them off with our Boxers around. I swear I am a typical Mother Hen ready to attack... LOL

Tank is an excellent name for a Boxer, lol.

Ours is named Chico, which I'm pretty sure means little one in Spanish. We tried to change it, but no luck.

We actually renamed Tank. When he came to us He was Panzer. As in the German Army "Tank". Panzer to me seemed a little "panzy" LOL So Tank suited him perfect!

I am owned by two Boxers as well. I would trust my male, but my female is deaf and a bit of a spaz. So far they have been great with the chicks, I keep telling them they are "mommies babies" and I make they lay down when they are by the brooder. The chicks are still inside, so I am not sure about what will happen once they are in the coop. I would never leave them unattended though, I don't want to take that chance.

Our Sophie is a bit (ok a lot) dim witted. She is a white deaf girlie, and is a few cards short of a full deck

chickadee -- i had to laugh - i feel that way about my crew - none were born deaf they learned to ignore us unless we have food LOL
my brindle Abbey is a big nut jog - but they are great dogs.
