Sometimes you can get an educated guess by watching their behavior. It is easier in lighter colored birds because you can see their blushing better. If you are lucky enough to have both sexes to compare, you will notice males blushing more when you make interesting noises to them. Some males will act more dominate and accurately and strut and you will get the feeling that he is flirting with you as you interact. You might see girls squatting to be submission when you approach her or when the boy poults do.
