Brand new first time chicken owner, got my new 4 "kids" yesterday.

2 came as pullets (the blonde ones), Buff and Light Sussex mix, 8 weeks old.

2 came as question marks (the white one, a 8 week purebred Delaware, and the dark one, a 4 week Blue Laced Red Wyandotte mix).

Suggestions / help on what they are?

Thanks!

I think, the white one is a roo.
not sure about the other one.
I could be wrong, but the white one has a face like a roo.

Thanks. We hope we have 3 hens a 1 rooster... Let's see!

Anyone else can tell something about the Blue Laced chick?

you are going to need more hen, if you plan to keep one roo.
The minimum ratio is 10 hens to one rooster
other wise your hens are really going to get beat up.

What do you mean by "really going to get beat up"?

By " beat up", goldensparrow means.. roosters like to mate a LOT, and if there is not enough hens to keep him busy, the hens back will lose feathers and can get raw from the process. The best ratios is one rooster to 10 hens

The dark one definately looks to be a boy. The white one might be also. The other 2 kinds look like girls.

It's kinda what we are thinking, unfortunately, 2 pullets and 2 roos.

I've read on this forum that the 10 to 1 ratio is more like a myth thing... It works for commercial operations but some breeders keep 1 to 2 hens per rosters... Fact or myth???

So the little dark one isn't a blue laced mix? Are you sure?
