Boys VS Girls

Defiantly! How are Khakis? I've been wanting to add a few to my flock.

Khakis are very dependable layers of normal hen sized greenish tinted eggs. They are a bit shy, but very sturdy and able to do much self feeding if able to roam a bit. They will learn to come back to their building at night, if you leave the light on. Some of mine insisit on waiting until I let them out to lay, while others are o.k. with the building. Don't tend to be broody, so be prepared to incubate. IF you like to cook, you can put a hen or two togather outside, and feed them to flavor their eggs. (example - add lots of chopped carrots to their food, and get sweeter eggs. Let them eat snails, and get a rich flavor to the yolk, let them eat too much algea off a pond, and ucK! (trust me on this)

My Pekings always lay early, and I seldom find them trying to hide a nest. I get the occasinal broody one, but I jsut load her up with eggs for a few days, and let her go for it. Smart, and not too shy, but a bit quacky.

They sound wonderful! Hopefully the feed store will get some in this year!

I understand. Fowl friends are a funny breed. But hey, I find my birds and dogs more dependable than most people!

I love Peking ducks, very sweet and good layers of Large eggs! My Khakis only lay hen sized eggs. (more work for hubby to crack more you see).

Do you have an incubator Cochin? Maybe I SHOULD send you some quail eggs!! I can even tell you how to make an incubaor for under $6, if you've got a light that works! Then you won't have time to be loonely! They are readt to eat (if thus inclined) at 6 weeks, and hens lay at 7!

LOL! no we dont and i kinda want a pigeon but if a quail can live outside then ya! no incubator but we have like 50,00 heat lamps so i think so

our kindergarten class has a quail, i feel bad for it cause all it has is food, water, and bedding, nothing to entertain it, it paces back and forth

That quail nees a buddy to be happy. Let me send you a few.

Homemade incubator:
Needed: one styrofoam beverage cooler, or any square box with a lid.
One sheet of 1/4" wire mesh just smaller than the inside of the lid
one accuarate thermometer
one basic lamp that only has the cord and light socket lelft
duct tape
25 watt bulb
a small square of glass or thick clear plastic for view window.
a few lids to mayo jars, or similar. Even a plate will work. (these hold water and support your mesh wire)
more tape (duct or masking)
a pencil to stab some holes

Take the cooler, and turn it upside down. the top is now the base. set water holder(s) in, and place wire on top. (I like to zig zag wire a bit to hold eggs in low areas better.)

Now for the new top (formerly the ice holding section) take your light bulb holder and use it to mark a hole in top center of cooler. make the hole (knife works), then duct tape it and the cord to the top of cooler, so it won't fall in. The bulb should be able to be put in by reaching iinside now. You just look in and see a bulb from the inside. test that light works. proceed to decide where you want your view window, and carefully trim styrofoam to allow the window to be put in. (I leave a little lip to support it. Tape the edges.

Now, get a shot glass or something similar, and tape your thermometer so that the bulb falls about the middle of egg hieght. Put it into the incubaor, and put on the lid, and plug it in. Use pencil to make about 10 holes around the bottem, just below egg wire. (air must be able to get in here!) Now, make about 20 holes evenly spaces around top of incubaor, just below the "roof". I do 7 on long sides, and 3 on sort sides. Gice inicubaor 12 hours to warm, then start putting tape over holes (as needed) to keep in warmth, or uncover to cool.

You will have to adjust this daily. Remember to turn eggs about every 4-8 hours. This is a STILL AIR INCUBAOR/HATCHER. That means you want a temp of 101.5-102 at the height of center of eggs.

Thats it. I've used this when incubaots broke down, and for hatching lots!! I often have mixed eggs in my big one, so I just take them out 3 days before lockdown, add lots of water for humidity (and a wet sponge at hatching time). You will need to keep an close eye on water in bottem. The light can be drying.

What kind of fish?? I bred show guppies for awhile. Got an angelfish pair to breed a few times (but felt bad when all the other fished had to live in 10% of the tank due to overprotective parents).

I love Angels! I mostly bred live bearers and a variety of cichlids.
