I copies this from a post on CafeMom... I thought this would interest those of you with babies or those with friends or family members with babies.

    Renae.......

The following is a script from CNN Newsource, on a new report about a possible chemical in formula cans.

EDITED TO ADD: The video shows the ready to feed formula, NOT powdered.

    (ANCHOR LEAD)

THE SAME GROUP THAT WARNED MOTHERS ABOUT A CHEMICAL FOUND IN PLASTIC BABY BOTTLES HAS NEW RESEARCH CLAIMING THE CHEMICAL ALSO CAN BE FOUND IN BABY FORMULA CANS.

    IT'S CALLED "BISPHENOL A" (BIS-FEE-NOL A) -- OR B-P-A.

SO, IS THE CONCERN OVER B-P-A AN OVER-REACTION FROM ENVIRONMENTALISTS...

OR SOMETHING NEW MOMS NEED TO TAKE SERIOUSLY?

    DOCTOR SANJAY GUPTA INVESTIGATES:

    --REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

NEW MOTHER HELEN NIBLOCK WANTED TO BREASTFEED 5-WEEK OLD EMMA, BUT LIKE OTHER MOMS AT THIS 'REAL BIRTH' CLINIC, HAD TROUBLE GIVING HER ENOUGH..

Helen Niblock/Feeds baby liquid formula : "I actually cried when they told me they had to give her formula in the hospital!"

TO MAKE SURE EMMA'S GETTING ENOUGH NUTRITION, NIBLOCK FEEDS HER 'ENFAMIL' ...JUST ONE OF THE CANNED BABY FORMULAS A RESEARCH GROUP CLAIMS CONTAINS A TOXIN... THAT COULD HURT HER.

IT'S "BISPHENOL -A," OR BPA, USED AS A PROTECTIVE LINING IN CANS.

SOME MOTHERS PANICKED WHEN THEY FIRST LEARNED BPA IS IN MANY PLASTIC BABY BOTTLES...

AND NOW, SOME TOP BABY FORMULA MAKERS ACKNOWLEDGE BPA IS IN THEIR CANS - THEY SAY IT'S TRACE AMOUNTS, WITHIN FEDERAL LIMITS.. BUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP CLAIMS IN NEW REPORT THAT EVEN A LITTLE BIT - CAN BE VERY HARMFUL, LATER.

Jane Houlihan/VP for Research, Environmental Working Group : "Bisphenol - a is linked to toxic events at very low doses. concerns range from breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, early puberty and infertility."

AND, KEEPING THEM HONEST, CONFLICTING STATEMENTS FROM EXPERTS -- INCLUDING SOME GOVERNMENT EXPERTS -- ARE FUELING SOME PARENTS' FEARS.

Ari Brown/Member, American Academy of Pediatrics: "There are so many warnings and scares out there."

A FEDERAL PANEL, FOR EXAMPLE, JUST PUBLISHED FINDINGS THAT BPA POSES --QUOTE-- "SOME RISK" TO BABIES' BRAINS AND BEHAVIOR.. BUT IT DIDN'T SAY WHAT AMOUNTS WOULD POSE WHAT RISK..

THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS HASN'T WEIGHED IN YET -

BUT ITS MEMBERS ARE REVIEWING ANIMAL RESEARCH SUGGESTING BPA COULD BE HARMFUL TO HUMANS, EVEN AT LEVELS THAT REGULATORS CALL SAFE.

Ari Borwn: "if you look at animal models there maybe some concern that levels lower than that may not be safe for exposures in humans."

CRITICS SAY, HOGWASH! CITING A MISSING LINK IN THE BPA DEBATE -- ACTUAL HUMAN STUDIES.

THE FDA SAYS ANIMAL STUDIES SHOW AN INFANT WOULD HAVE TO INGEST OVER 7-THOUSAND TIMES MORE THAN NORMAL TO CAUSE HARM.

    - AND SEES NO REASON TO BAN OR RESTRICT ITS USE IN BABY FORMULA CANS.

THE MAKER OF ENFAMIL IS ONE OF THE FORMULA MAKERS ACKNOWLEDGING TRACE AMOUNTS OF BPA IN THEIR CANS BUT SAYING THEIR PRODUCTS ARE SAFE.

THE INDUSTRY MAINTAINS, "NO CHANGES IN FEEDING PRACTICES FOR INFANTS ARE RECOMMENDED."

SCIENTISTS MAY NOT KNOW FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS WHAT BPA COULD DO TO BABIES... THAT DOES NOTHING FOR ALREADY STRESSED-OUT NEW PARENTS WHO WANT ANSWERS.

    CONCERNED PARENTS CAN TRY ALTERNATIVES:

--POWDERED FORMULA OR FORMULA NOT PACKAGED IN CANS

--GLASS OR BPA-FREE PLASTIC BABY BOTTLES

if there's an easy cheap way to limit or reduce the exposure in your child's
    life, why not do it?
