I've been trying to push my post count up so that I could post some pictures. I'm new here, so I hope I'm doing this right.
I am a new chicken Mama to 4 peeps. I got all 4 from the local feed store. 3 of them from "pullet" bins, and 1 straight run. I figure it's still probably too early to tell if I have boys or girls, but I thought I'd throw it out there. If for no other reason than to show off my little fuzzies! They are all about 12-13 days old.
#1 - This is Sandy (Colonel Sanders was too masculine? lol) - purchased as a pullet, from a bin labeled "Aracauna", but I get that she's probably an EE of many colorful varieties.
I think she's a day older than the other chicks. Seems to always be just a titch bigger than the rest. Seems healthy and she's friendly, but shy and cautious.
#2 - is Black Beauty. Purchased as an Australorpe pullet. She's also shy. A bit inquisitive, but doesn't like to be caught. She completely spazzes out when I catch her. Once she chills out though, she seems to enjoy the affection.
#3 - Here we have "Sam" or "Chicken Patty" (depending on the day - my 4 year old named him/her and it changes back and forth daily). Very fitting because this is the one that we got as a straight run Silver Lakenvelder. Everything I've read says that these birds avoid human contact and are a bit nervous. I think I have the freak of that breed. LOL This one is insanely crazed for attention. As soon as I walk into the bathroom (where the brooder is)... it jumps up on the food dish to be the first greeter when I pull the hardware cloth off. If I put my hand into the brooder, it will jump into it completely willingly. This one used to peck the other chick's eyes.... but doesn't anymore. It seems bossy, but settles down with everyone when they sleep. I'm not sure if the different behavior means this might be a roo? The other chicks are cautious and wary, but calm. This one is just a spazz. LOL!
#4 - This is Stella. Stella came from a Plymouth Barred Rock pullet bin. She seems to lag behind all of the others in wing feather development. She's incredibly shy, hates to be picked up and is REALLY fast and nimble - and the loudest chirper. I see that her head spot is irregular and that there are black smudges on her legs, but the feather development gets me. Do these BR's just develop slowly? I got her on the same day as all of the other babies, and while the others have almost fully feathered wings, she still has little nubs that are barely a centimeter or so long. Doesn't seem to bother her... she seems a bit smaller, but not by a lot. And this is the one I had to wash it's tush everyday to stay ahead of the pasty butt problem. No longer a problem, btw. I just wonder if maybe she's not a pullet?
Thanks for any input you can offer. I'm super new to all of this, and I can't have roos where I live (in suburbia). Mostly I'm just curious at this point. I'm not so much of a patient person and I am having lots of fun guessing.
Thank you!!
