Hi everyone. In another thread several members have commented on my flock (cockerel vs pullet). This is my first flock. I will have 6 hens (mix of BO, RIR, SLW, Black sex link) and will have to chooose between my 3 cockerels to only keep one. SLW OR BR and why?? What considerations do I need to address in picking the roo for my flock? We aren’t there yet but eventually I’d love for one of my girls to raise some babies if that makes a difference.

What is the purpose of your flock? Eggs, pets, insect control, teach children responsibility?

What is your goal for breeding? Do you want them to replace your old layers? Increase flock size? Eat them?

Of the two choice of breeds you listed ... I choose the Barred Rock ... as I prefer a single comb ... and the Plymouth Rocks taste good!

Good questions!! As to purpose, all of the above. Although my kids have the responsibility thing down pat with all the inside pets we have plus horses and pigs.

Breeding: again all of the above. I want to increase the size of my flock and keep consistent layers. Too many cockerels to hen ratio and we will eat them.

Am I going to lose out on laying and taste after cross breeding?

Maybe I should harvest a BR and the SLW now and keep a BR for the flock. I’m also interested in flock protection given hawks in my area.
