Almost 1 year old barred rock that has recently started making a noise like crowing but not quite. Its also larger than my other hens, has a large comb, and started growing spurs. Recently we started letting them out of their enclosure to roam around and it seems to be very protective of my other hens. We're new to raising chickens so forgive my lack of knowledge. But she/he is a mystery to us. What do you think?

    This is Rocky

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Rocky is definitely a rooster, and not a pure Barred Rock; he is likely a Black Sex Link cross. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with Rocky.

Thank you so much for your input. I had a suspicion that he was mixed with something else seeing as he looks nothing like a pure breed barred rock rooster. I think that's what was throwing me off the most lol. Why do you think he hasn't really crowed yet?

Rocky is a boy. Did you get him from a hatchery? You may be lucky and have a quiet rooster, that won't cockadoodle night and day. That's a good thing.

    Tending to my chickens
[IMG] I agree. And some roosters are late to crow. One rooster I had crowed first when he was a year old.

No we got him from a small local breeder. She said she would take them back if any turned out to be a rooster but he's so friendly we don't want to get rid of him. We just worry about the potential of crowing

You're welcome. As cluckcluckgirl stated, some roosters are just slow to crow.
