Brace yourselves, feed prices are going to rise!!!!

Here north of Chicago, good luck finding a family farm! Land is worth millions! The farmer did not make out...his kids did, by selling it off to developement. Back to chickens...around here the only feed store I know of is Farm & Fleet. Anyone use their feed brand? No poultry yet, still doing my homework. Thanks.

prices here in europe have risen also due to the rise in price. I would rather pay the higher price than start giving hay or what ever and risking impacted crop JMHO

My laying crumbles has doubled in price since may, and hay tripled due to the dry season, but i still buy a bale of hay for my ladies since i can't free graze them due to all the dogs around, they seem to love the hay they get and they need it due to them eating all the greenery in the run and have nothing else but rock in their run, so i buy a bale of hay a month and try to make it last, by giving them a slice every week.

My sister & brother-in-law own a feed store. They are purina & heinold feed dealers. Since December 2007 some of the different poultry products have gone up $1.85 per bag for the dealers. That is just in 30 days. Crazy! So as consumers we are looking at a possible $2.00 hick per 50lbs. of feed. And there is no glimmer of a down-swing either.
My critters cost a fortune to feed...I sure hope they start laying golden eggs!!!

"you are right the biofuel movement has certainly helped to make corn prices go up."

please remember that corn is used as corn oil in most processed foods, and americans eat a lot of processed foods, go to the grocery stores and try to find "real " food products,,,, freezers full of corn oil processed foods....
sad...
but nice to meet people here that eat real food like me...

thnaks for the tip on hay, my girls are ripping my yard apart, and I need to confin them more, so hay it is..

I was just informed that all Purina products were going up $3-$8 per bag here in eastern WA. Chick start is expected to get up to $26-$28 per bag this season.

Laying pellets are already $13.89 for a 50lb bag. I called some of the big egg producers on the west side of the state last summer and they said they mill their own food because it is way cheaper.

My egg prices and chick/chicken prices will have to go up a couple dollars each if this doesn't slow down.

And to think people thought $3 per chick for a purebred quality farm raised chick was too much last year.....

Wait til they go to the store to buy a loaf of bread for around $5........

All fertilizers contain Nitrogen, Potassium & Phosphorous. They are most definately NOT made from oil. I took Chemical Engineering in school & would love to see your source for this misinformation.

Hello,

I just got done reading a great book that goes into all the background on our modern corn based economy. Michael Pollan " The Omnivores Dilemma" http://www.michaelpollan.com/omnivore.php

My wife and I now say "What would Joel Salatin Do" when trying figure out the next thing for the garden, chicks or such.

Purebred chicks have hit as high as $8.50 each on this side of the border. Few hatcheries left with them and those that do have raised prices dramatically.

Feed prices going up is something that is going to continue. Glad I sprout most everything now!
