Braggs Mountain Buffs

They seem to be producing true for us.... which would make them a new breed. We sold four of the original hens yesterday, would like to sell off about six more to make room for the new chicks we have growing out. We won't know how prolific they are until we know how old our hens are. However we absolutely love the size of the eggs and so do our egg customers.

We have stopped hatching for the season. We only had the one rooster with 14 hens so the fertility problem was probably a numbers game. Come spring we will likely seperate the flock into two, each with a roo.

We are trying to not make any assumptions until we turn over the flock. That way we will know the age of the hens and the care they have received. We still have high hopes for the breed. It will likely be two years before we have really determined what is worth pursuing.

We are starting to get conformation these birds were a lot older than we were told. While we suspected from the start they are now starting to die from what appears to be old age.

STILL no photos of the birds....I'm beginning to wonder if these birds even exist.

Does anybody out there in BYC-land own Braggs Mountain Buffs?

Could you please post photos of your birds / flock and tell us about them...I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes the birds exist and I have told you about them. If you have nothing else to do come by and take all the photos you want otherwise wait patentially untill I find the right time and conditions to take some.

So what is your guestimation on age?? Do you think they age well??? Or is there no way to tell ?? How long were the spurs on the roosters?? How are the chicks looking about what age are they now? Hope its not too many questions!!

We have no way of knowing the age of the birds we got. As I said earlier we were told they were about two but that was quite obviously not the case. A nuber of the birds have begun dieing off apparently form old age. This is a picture of the youngest of three rooseters we got. The oldest one has died. We are now getting 4-6 eggs a day from 8 hens. The eggs are jumbo medium dark brown. The birds still look very rough but much better than they did when we brought them home.

Several of the pictures won't load, maybe they are too big. I am hoping that next years birds look a lot better than this bunch. At any rate we really like the eggs we are getting!
