Thor was an awesome rooster. He was very good with his hens - beak feeding, breaking up hen fights, keeping order. In three years I never had a single predator issue while Thor was alive. After he passed I had several birds lost to predators. During a dog attack I watched Thor put himself in harm's way by running back and forth in front of the dogs, giving the girls time to hide. He was wary of strangers, but not aggressive.
My other roo at the time, a light brahma, started testing me when he was still a teenager. I put him in his place and never had any more trouble with him (Zeus). The difference between the two roos raised together? The light brahma I handled constantly from the time he was a chick. Thor I didn't handle anymore than necessary. Since that experience I have never babied another roo. IMO, they do much better left to do their job as rooster and not made into cuddlebugs.
I would think getting a brahma roo close(r) to the breed standard would increase your chances of getting a calm, docile roo since brahma roos tend to be gentle giants anyhow. You have to keep in mind though that they are individuals and it is possible to get a terror with any breed.
Does that make sense?
