Have found a 1.5 y/o Brahma hen on 26 DEC 18 (26 F / N. lower Michigan) in the hen house not moving.
There are no overt indicators to why she struck this pose and stayed there. She's part of a mixed flock of ducks, geese and chickens (40).
The birds are spoiled rotten. They live in a 18 x 22 fortress with a steel roof. The floor is straw. The coop is generally clean.
So I picked her up from a position that looked like she had been mounted by a rooster (3 & a P roosters). She was just stuck there awake alert but not moving. Eyes alert, head is vigilant, but no movement. All the other birds are just hunky dory.
I turned her in all directions to get a reaction. When she was held upright leaning back she flapped her wings slowly twice. Her pupils are equal and there is no apparent shock. No blood - nothing. She just lies there. I did give the flock a deer carcass two days ago, but they always eat them when I can get one.
I'm thinking a rooster mounted her and injured something in her nervous system. My wife thinks she's cold. Not egg bound either. Currently she is in a box in the basement warming up awaiting the stew pot if I can't figure something out.
This is your chance to save her because I don't need 40 chickens, but she's a nice bird. Good luck!
