The rusty red shoulder (circled) is  much more common in males. It can happen in females, but it's pretty rare. But the dead giveaway is the pointy saddle feathers (outlined in red),  only males have those

I never even thought to notice anything as I looked at the comb and wattle and they were just so small. I figured it was just a huge Brahma. It was my first Brahma I’ve owned. Then my husband saw it on top of another chicken and he said I think this one’s a male.
So bummed. I bought 6 chickens from someone that swore they were females, ended up with three females but out of those three only one can lay, as one died already, one can’t walk and then we’re just left with one.
