I have one Brahma chick that is sexed as a pullet from a hatchery, but accuracy for them seems about 2/10 chicks are roosters. In the case of it turning out a rooster, I’d like to keep it. It’s from cackle hatchery, so I’d guess it wouldn’t get too big and heavy?
My mature laying hens are average sized. Most are 5-6lbs, but two are 4lbs(all under a year old so I’m not sure if they’re done growing). In the case of it being a rooster, would it be too heavy for the hens to handle? Anyone with experience? If it’s aggressively mating the hens/chasing them I wouldn’t keep it. Only if it’s well behaved and gentle.
Anyone with experience in this aspect, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I have a light Brahma cockerel. His name is Monster for a reason. I believe he’s 7 months old. We got his egg from a breeder so he’s pretty big. Luckily I also have light Brahma hens. He mostly breeds them and my marans. I have seen him try to grab at my bantams when they free range together but he quickly realizes he’s too big. He has tried to breed with my RIRs and my OEs but they don’t let him.

From my experience he knows who is big and who is too small. He doesn’t want to hurt the hens. That isnt his overall goal. His goal is to mate with them and if they’re too small he won’t be able to. If he hurts them he won’t be able to either. Now this might be because of his disposition, he’s a sweet guy, or because I have three other cockerels. Certain hens belong to those other cockerels. Hope my rambling has helped some.
