Brain-damaged chicken?

Even tho you are organic, plants and herbs can effect all of us different. I have Rotinone powder available, its "organic" but it will be taxing on any body if you injest it.
We have autos with oil, anti freeze, gasoline. Salt, ashes from your grill, wood heat etc.
Someone at one point said not to use vinegar in galvinized waterers as it will leach the zinc and harm your chickens.
These are innocent items, re think your yard, foods and plants/herbs that are yummy for us such as Rhubarb, it can harm our girls.

bloody hell,,, sounds just like my wife, !!!

Does she cluck NON-STOP? And when she goes does the poo look like it came from an elephant? If so then I would say broody as well.

LOL I have to laugh at myself, the first broody hen I got I thought that she was egg bound. I cried for a day cause she is my favorite hen. I even brought her inside and put a heating pad under her!!!

Now don't label me as stupid yet. It was the first time I had ever had an adult hen....3 years ago. And she went broody not long after I got her. And I was reading in my book about egg bound hens, and I was just sure she was bound up and going to die!

Well, I can now laugh about it. I tell you this.....that is the ONLY time she has ever gone broody.

I am sure she is scared to death to go broody around me for fear that I will freak out again.

BTW I am now a veteran at broody hens. I have had lots of experience with them.

Seems unlikely that she's broody as she has never laid an egg before. (Also, no clucking and no elephant scat.)

Just tried the bath. She seemed to like it (or at least not mind), had her in for close to twenty minutes. She got out, cleaned herself with the others, and went back to same old. The upside is that as of today she no longer seems ill, just scrunched up.

One question: Where would I feel the egg if testing from the outside? I mean, her underside is hard (though seems vacant right around the vent, from outside), but I sort of figured that the hardness was just her skeleton. Trying to remember what the backside feels like on a dressed chicken... Any guidelines for this?

describe her droppings..color and consistency..

have you checked her crop?

best to check in the morning before she eats..it should be empty..feel for any lumps.

check her eyes..are they bright and alert? or cloudy and gray? do they look normal?
could she have injured herself, by falling, for example..?
or fighting with another hen..

could she have been "de-throned" by another hen?
how does she act around the others?

I would try the yogurt, and vitamins as a poster in your other post suggested..
or go with Poly-vi-sol liquid baby vitamins, Enfamil brand, no iron..3 drops ON her beak with a dropper once a day for a week or so, then taper off for a week.

Well, good news! She's back to normal and I have no idea why. She never laid an egg. Who knows--maybe she just wanted a bath. I've put oyster shell in their feed now in order to minimize the possibility of any one of them getting eggbound in the future. (The thought of KY jelly and a manual extraction was unappealing, to say the least...)

Thanks for all the help!

Glad she's feeling better! For futture reference, if they eat metal beads or anything with lead paint, it WILL take a while to affect them. Heavy metal poisoning occurs due to bioaccumulation, meaning they have to keep ingesting it to show any ill effects. The body can neither process nor rid itself of heavy metals (like lead) so they build up in the animal's system until the level becomes toxic and they start having neuro symptoms. This is why lead paint in houses is bad, but why kids don't get sick the first time they lick the walls!

You may want to do a bit of research on the oyster shells ~ I have read the calcium can cause kidney damage to pullets that are not yet laying.

Good luck! Glad she's feeling better.
