Brainstorming for Chick Growth/Development and Breed photo Index.

------------

Start with the breeds most often carried by TSC -

Con a Judge or two to help us out, stamping a bird pass/fail, not number of points.

(I'm thinking out loud)

We get say an Orpington breeder - they submit pics of chicks (example buff) at birth, few days, 1 wk etc. Said person agrees to mark each chick so we know what chick is in each photo, then when the genders are obvious we know how to label and post the photos??

Maybe this will help:

About two years ago a handful of members started working on a cool project to document the growth of a chicken from first born baby to adult:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=61033

This was before we created our new breeds database system:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/breeds/

They even got together and were working on gathering all the info and pictures and made some great progress! There was even a Google docs sheet with info and links to pictures. Here is a page that was created with information:

We could very well revive this project and create something amazing if we have some really organized and dedicated volunteers to be project managers. What I imagine is using the existing "Simple Breed Pages" to create and manage all the "progressive chick pictures"

So, a lot of work has already been done, and we have a lot of the systems in place to make this relatively easy. Now we just need project managers and peeps to submit quality pictures!

I'd like to help if some one needs me.

I have FBCMs hatching on the 26th and more breeds after that.

I also have some quail in there.

I have been thinking that since so many people are also breeding EEs and Olive Eggers or end up with them, it might be nice to have a section, so people who buy these can kind of figure out what they have. Thing is if the mixture was from pure parents it would be fun to figure out what someone might have brought home from the feed store or through a hatchery. There are soooo many combinations and breed possibilities though. It was a just for fun project.

I also have Bantam Wellies, Penes, Mille Fluer d'Uccles and 4 colors of AMs. Have a few others, but either a roo or the hens, so those won't count. LOL Also some chicks even after this weeks massacre and I'm always hatching something out. I need to find my cameras or get a new one and then I can help with pics at least.

Nifty-Chicken - Yes! thats exactly what I was imagining! I will help if I can, I dont have chicks to photograph, but perhaps I can help with the organization of the photos or whatever.

Honestly, that's where we will need the most help! For projects like this we like to have a handful of "project managers" so they can all work together. Any other volunteers?

Trust me on this the more project mangers the better

i would love to see this

I was involved in this project from the beginning. Due to medical issues here I'm not sure how much I can jump back in to help at this point in time.

I am more than willing to help 'guide' whoever can step up to take over this project. Having one or two people to be in charge would be best and then several (maybe a bunch) others who can help however needed and directed by those in charge.

I think the hardest (most time consuming) parts are done... it's just putting everything together at this point.

Having said that... someone will have to go through everything to see exactly what we have and what we need to get us 'restarted'. That will take quite a bit of time.
