I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

:welcome I would like to say that it's all peaches and cream . But I don't want to lead you on. There are good and bad times when raising chickens . They can be a lot of fun and a lot of work . The good outweighs the bad . Be well prepared coop well ahead of the chickens . Good luck.

Welcome. I'd suggest that you look at birds that have small combs: pea, rose, walnut combs. I refuse to have feathered feet in my flock, b/c I think they are more prone to issues with snow/ice/mud. Check out Henderson's chicken breed's chart.

Other topics to look at: fermented feed, deep litter bedding in both coop and run. Brooding chicks in the coop. Mother Heating pad cave brooding. There are also some good gardening threads if you are a gardener. Chickens and gardens are made for each other... but you don't want to let your birds into your garden while it is producing for you!

:frow Hi! Popping in from the Canada thread :)

To get you started these are the breeds I have or had, and were chosen based on several factors: cold hardiness, dual purpose, good foragers, friendly, and pretty!

Australorp
Barnevelder
Brahma
Orpington
Sussex
Wyandotte

I also looked after some White Leghorns last winter and they did very well!

In winter, especially since we have such damp winters, it's all about coop ventilation and there is a ton of information here all about it.
I use deep litter in my coop (dirt floor).

Good luck in your decision making!
