We are doing a fun little project and seeing how our chicks hatch in the coop all naturale. This cutie was in our coop this morning. It is from a barred rock rooster and (I think) our Rhode Island Red hen. I’m reading all about sexing barred rock chicks and am having trouble with this one. Any idea?

To young to sex and I think you used backwards combination,Ifbthr male would have been Rhode Island Red and hen barred rock, you would have got a black sexlink,a bird that can be sexed at birth, maybe you have the mix but am unsure if you can use opposite gender of the other breed and still get a bsl.

Rhode Island Red over Barred Rock hen is the only way to sex chicks at hatch. Yours is flipped around and so will take around 5-8 weeks to determine gender.

Too young. Purebred barred rocks can be sexed by the shape of the spots on their heads, and by the type of barring they have when they get some feathers. But it doesn't work with barred rock crosses. So 7 to 8 weeks is about the earliest for accurate sexing, unless you see large, red comb and wattles before then, which would indicate a cockerel.

Yep...no way to sex this little darling early. You'll have to wait for the normal comb development and sex feathers.

All chicks will be barred from that pairing, and because they are not a controlled barred line, but mixed breeds, no way to use barring tools...large or small head spot...as all offspring will have a single barred gene.

Barred pure breeds have 2 barred gene males and 1 barred gene females making for the difference in head spots and color growth in the early days.

Cute little babe. Enjoy momma and babe.
