Brand new chick lover

Hi we have just decided (after some careful consideration), to start raising chickens! We are so excited to get started and can't wait to get started. We have been researching this site and others like crazy but I am wondering what kind of chicks to get to start out? My daughter is the one who finally talked me into this, she is 10 and has chicks at her school right now. So she will be helping me with all the work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It depends on what characteristics you want in your chickens. Good layers? Sex links are awesome for that. Friendly? Buff orps are a very friendly breed. Cold hardy? RIR, Barred rocks are popular on that front.
