Hello all wanted to say hello and tell a little about myself and why I wanted to start raising chickens. first off im 32 years old live in Michigan. been married for 10 years have 3 handsome boys . a 12 year old 11 year old and a 7 year old. bought our first home 2 years ago and was thrown in to fostering my niece she is 10 and has been with us since we bought our house .. we are now adopting her though the foster system. younger boys play hockey and the older one basket ball and wrestling. my soon to be daughter is a majorette. so I am one busy mommy!! I have been a stay at home mom for 8 years when I could no longer work because I was diagnosed with pan-ulcerative colitis . it has been very painful and stressful since I am so busy. my husband works full time 13 hours a day. I have started seeing all the junk they put in our food and started to change our lives and the way we eat . I was told rasing chickens was a easy thing to do and you get fresher food from them. so thats why we are giving it a go :) we wanted to raise chickens for egg and meat .. we live in a rural area . we have about and acre of land but was told by our village we still could only have 6 chickens :( so again we are going to try with that .. I bought 3 buff orthingtons and 3 Isa browns chicks 3 days ago and are just now looking at coop Ideas . we live in michiagn and the kind of winter we have had this past 2013/2014 was not the best so will really need your help with everything that is chickens! I am so happy I found this site :) any and all help would be great!!! so nice to meet you all

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks! Nice breeds, they should lay plenty of eggs for you. Good place to start reading is the BYC Learning Center, lots of great chicken keeping articles there https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center be sure to check out the Coops section also, and you might want to check out your state thread for neighbors and any advice they have for your climate https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/697050/michigan-thread-all-are-welcome/0_20
