Hello. My name is Dee. I live in Oldham county Kentucky. My family and I are interested in starting our own backyard coop. But I feel like I can't find any local people to talk to about it. We need more info on what type of coop, what breeds work well with our weather, good dispositions because of the kids, best egg layers, etc. I can't even figure out where to buy live chickens in my area. We are right outside Louisville, ky.

Welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community!!

The best place to start is our learning center. Lots of great articles on getting started with chickens and all other aspects of keeping poultry...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

You might also want to check out our coops pages to give you some idea at what you might like in your yard...

You can chat with all your chicken neighbors in your state thread here. You can ask how they do things, where they get their birds or supplies and how to survive the winter months...

As for where to get chicks, some feed stores are still carrying them, others not. You might look into some of the large Hatcheries like Mt Healthy in Ohio, Ideal in Texas, My Pet Chicken, Murray McMurray, (I think they are in Iowa??) Chickens For Back Yards, etc...You might also check out our Buy Sell and Trade section as there maybe members nearby offering up the breeds you seek...

As for breeds, lots of great breeds out there. Check out these two breeds pages for some quick info on the different breeds...

Good luck on this new adventure and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some great links to get you started with your chicken keeping adventure!

Hi and welcome!
I spent a month here learning before bringing home our flock, just last week.
There's also Meyer in Ohio, but if you don't want to order chicks you may find some swaps in your area or 4-h groups with members with birds for sale. I bought mine from a neighbor who had ordered chicks in a group hatchery buy, so I didn't have to deal with a brooder :)
