Brand New - Looking for positivity with a healthy reality

Hi Paul, I’m also from South Louisiana. I live in a small town, Port Barre, about 45 minutes northeast of Lafayette. However I work in our Lafayette clinic a couple of days a week. Welcome to raising chickens! It is by far one of the best things we’ve done. I so enjoy getting home in the afternoon and letting them out. I could sit for hours just watching them. Our temperature here can become extremely hot and humid so make sure you have shade for them, and I also make nice cool treats for the really hot days. Good luck with your adventure and I hope your neighbors are accepting of the chickens.

I ordered chicks in August from Ideal.
They lived outside too!

At the very minimum the coop should be at least 4 sq feet per bird.

You may want to look into an open air type coop too.
Not the closed in ones people up North use.

It is entirely too hot in Houston to lock birds in a completely closed in "regular" coop.

Wonderful! Thanks for the information, time to start modeling my chicken coop to figure out space and what not.

Oh! You might just have to stop by sometime and we can have some ::insert things Louisianan people do::!

We also plan on having a garden, my thought was to section out the garden and allow the chickens to roam there for about a year, and then next year we can plant the garden with the freshly tilled and rich soil.

So chicken coop + run I would make 4sqft a chicken (maybe 8 hens I think I have room for), have a chicken tunnel (i don't know the real name) to run to the future garden area and then allow them to also free roam in the yard for a couple hours a day.

3d modeling here i come on the chicken coop!

Coop alone needs to be at least 4 square feet per bird. You will want the run at least double this.

I am thinking only about getting two or so silkies because they are adorable, the rest I plan on getting Australorpes. Everywhere I am reading state that as long as they all grow up together, they should be fine, and more often than not the tiny silkies become top of the pecking order.

First off, welcome.

About bantams and large fowl together...It is possible and can work well. For me it is partly them being raised together. And partly, my bantams being able to run faster or fly higher. And being able to fit into smaller spaces.

My henhouse is enclosed in the coop and my bantams spend a good bit of time on the roof.

What ever you decide, good luck.

Thanks! I honestly don't know what I am doing yet. I just want silkies because they are adorable. However, with the productivity I need/want and the limitation on space. I might just stick with getting 6-8 Australorps instead. And less complications.

You could get a variety of larger breeds! I have Buff & Lavender Orpingtons, Production Reds, Jersey Giants, White Rocks, Barred Rocks, and Australorps all mixed together! The Production Reds can be a little bossy with the other breeds, but they're all really people friendly and curious. Just keep in mind that larger breeds like Australorps can take 6 or more months to start laying.

So I heard, and I would already be late into the season. Was kinda thinking about getting pullets, but wasn't sure. So much to figure out.

Not sure if getting chicks right now are too late.
