Hi

I randomly came across this site after I decided to get my daughter hatching eggs for her 3rd birthday. It's been awesome reading through the wealth of information here!

I posted a reply to another thread on early hatching but figured I'd go ahead and pose the question here as well. I purchased 10 Aracauna eggs from a local farmer, set them on the evening of 4/22. I was planning to go into lockdown late 5/9 (though realize even this might have been a little early). But I heard chirping from one of the eggs early in the day and by mid afternoon it hatched! This is the one egg I had my eye on the entire time candling, it just always looked "good". The remaining eggs all had some movement the last time I candled them, around day 15 or so but seemed to have much more dark mass in the egg than this one. In any case, I now have one chick and 4 eggs. I think 1 more just pipped today but can't be sure as the chick has been pecking the eggs. I've read a lot about the pros/cons about removing chicks. I'm still wondering, this little guy has been in there for about 30 hours now. I know they can last up to 3 days w/o food and water but if the other eggs are on a more normal schedule or have long hatches I'm wondering if I'm better off taking him out now? He is very active and dry (looks to me like he wants out but what do I know!) Also don't know how big the loneliness issue is. I work from home so while I don't have wings and feathers, I would be nearby most of the day. Appreciate any thoughts and opinions!

Thanks!!

Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad you joined. After the initial pip, I wait at least 24hrs before even thinking about helping. At 30 hrs, I start helping because by now the membrane has been drying up and it shrinkwraps the baby. But, this becomes a judgement call. Some folks won't help. Myself I can't let anything die without trying to save it because I might have done something wrong with the humidity. Good luck. :thumbsup

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. I remove chicks all the time even while eggs are still hatching with no problems. But I do it very quickly and keep a close eye on the humidity, I mist any exposed membrane on pipped eggs with a spray bottle of water, & sometimes I even pour a small amount of very warm water in the tray right before closing the lid to bump the humidity back up quickly. Congrats on your new chick and good luck with the rest of your hatch

Hello and :welcome

Sounds like you've got some good advice from other hatchers... if you have any more questions you can post them in Incubating and hatching eggs. However, I think it should be okay if you move the hatched chick out now. Good luck!

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D
