My first call tomorrow morning is going to be to my city building to double check if I am able to have chickens in my backyard... If I get the green light what should the next step be? Any advice on articles/books to read to start my coop building or what breed of chickens to get? I'm interested in having chickens for eggs as I'm trying to supply my family with organic food from gardening, chickens etc. thanks and I'm excited to learn from you all!

Welcome to the flock! Good books to read - Storeys guide to raising chickens & also the chicken health handbook. These are my 'go to' books if I can't find what I need here.
How many hens are you looking to have? Eggs or meat birds? Brown /white/blue eggs? How many birds will determine how big your coop should be. Go to the learning center tab here - it gives you loads of info. on space requirements of birds. Do not rush out and buy a coop until you have made sure of space requirements, many commercial made coops are just too small for the number of birds they say they can hold. You will also find coop building plans here.
Have a good root around the learning center, then ask again for any pesky little questions! Enjoy your new addiction,

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh, I hope you can keep chickens! We have a nice learning center here on BYC. The first section is on getting started. In the learning center there is lots of articles on building the coop, raising the chicks, keeping your adult flock healthy and a section on predators. Take a look here...

If you have any further questions, that is what we are here for.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I recommend Raising Chickens for Dummies, Keep Chickens!, Fresh Eggs Daily, and Chicken Coops.

Best wishes and feel free to ask any other questions!!

Welcome to BYC! You have gotten some good advice from other members and a good link from TwoCrows. If you are getting chickens for eggs, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars). They are hardy, friendly hybrids that are egg laying machines. If you do not want hybrids (since they will not breed true), I would suggest Black Australorps. They are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best brown egg layers of the standard breeds. Whatever kind of chickens you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! There is always something new to learn! Glad to have you here! See you around with the flock.

Hi and :welcome

Good luck, I hope you do get the green light. Keeping chickens is productive and rewarding!
I have had red sex-links for six years and they are fantastic layers who don't even break for the winter. They're easy to take care of and easy to find as well (at least round here). You could look at the Coops page for coop inspiration.

If you have an old shed or something in your garden that would do (our coop is pretty much a glorified shed with a couple of roosts in it - been left on its own for years and it does the job!)

I hope you find all the info you need, and have fun. :D
