Brand new to the chicken world!

:welcome

Good advice on the heat lamp from the previous greeters. An easy way to tell if your chicks are comfortable is to observe them...if they are all huddled directly under the heat source, they're probably chilly and if they are all as far away from the heat source as they can get, they're too warm. You want to see them comfortably moving in and out of the warm spots.

Best wishes with your new flock of littles!

Hi, we just started our first flock of 7 last night! We're looking forward to learning from everyone and im sure we'll have tons of questions in the coming days. So far the only real issue is the heat lamp. I cant seem to get a consistent temp no matter how i move it. Before we added the chicks, i had a pretty consistent temp of 105 with the surrounding area staying at 95. Now, with the chicks added, it dropped to the mid 80s overnight. I readjusted the lamp and went out a little bit ago and the hot spot was 120! That was with a pretty minimal move too. Maybe an inch closer. Now i have it pointing to the wall of the container. Hopefully that helps to bring that hot spot temp down. We'll see!
Welcome to BYC

Welcome to BYC! I recently invested in a brooder heat plate for my newly hatched ducklings. I was skeptical of it at first, I didn't think they would know to get under it for heat, but they figured it out quickly and seem to really enjoy it! Uses less power and much safer than the lamps. Very happy with it so far!
Thanks for joining our flock!
