We live in the NON-evergreen part of the Evergreen State! My 11-yr old daughter and I started the chicken thing just under a year ago and are hopelessly addicted. I wish my husband felt the same. Granted he is tolerant of "my precious's", as he refers to them, but I think he's a little jealous of the time I spend with them! We also have 2 dogs (a German Shep mix and a cocker) and 3 cats and live on 2.33 acres. We started with 3 Hubbard Browns, 1 RIR and 2 Barred Rocks (who were unfortunately roosters and not nice!). This spring we got 2 "Ameraucanas" (prob Easter Eggers!), 1 Buff Orp, and 2 bantams, who I suspect are also roosters!
Our first disaster occurred a couple weeks ago when 1 of the Hubbards had an egg break inside and after a couple days of nursing her, I had to put her out of misery. That was not a fun task but one I knew I would need to learn at some point in all of this! Outside of that, we've had a pretty good experience with them...minus having to deal with lice
(I'm open to suggestions about dealing with this as I clean out poop frequently and tried permethrin and I still saw a bug on one)
Now my biggest problem is that my daughter and I want to try several other breeds and I have to resist going too crazy!!
