Bread???

I now know that treats should not be given all the time but what about bread? Can chickens eat bread along with their food or is that considered a treat?

Pretty sure it's considered a treat, espcially if store bought. We always keep it in that categary. It freezes well, though, so save it for a time when you don't have a treat for the peeps.

We try to be careful about how much bread we feed ours. We had a couple of hens grab a big piece of bread last year and run off with it; they gorged the whole thing. A couple of days later they both died. I don't know if maybe the bread had anything to do with them dying...maybe it caused some sort of impacted crop problem, or whatever...but we only feed bread for treats and make sure it's torn into small pieces before they can have any.

DH accidently choked a Canadian Goose on a whole slice of bread.

We shred ours up, too. And often I'll shred it and then let it sit in the chicken scraps bucket all day so it gets stale and crispier, too. Or soaks up juices from veggie scraps and leftovers.

Our chickys really love the small bread pieces that we give them!

They get some almost every day.

thanks for the comments, I was also wondering if I could give like smal peices of apple or bread to my chick.

My chickens go nuts for bread for one of their treats. I do not feed it daily but maybe once a week. If they see that loaf swinging in my hands I am done for.

Just out of curioisty how old do chickadees have to be before they eat small pieces of bread?

I dunno, my 5-6 week old silkie eats bread very well so I'm guessing pretty young. I have a 4 day old silkie but I haven't tried feeding it bread. I would say 2 weeks old.

I feed mine leftover toast from the Sunday morning big breakfast we have, break it into small bits for them.
I also feed them the crust off of sandwiches sometimes or the end pieces in small bits.
