Breast is very enlarged on hen

ohhh nooo! what a sin. Such a young chickie. Sadly I didn't find a solution. But my chickie is still alive. And I'm still in love with her. Lol.

I kept her inside last night, withheld food overnight as well, woke up to her still being enlarged. I'm beginning to wondering she's just overfilling herself seeing as she's the runt still!

Wonder if you could give her less food, or is she in with others??
As long as she can digest it soon so that those muscles don't become damaged or weakened.

I'm sorry you lost her, Theemrwright.

I have 2 hens that have huge crops. I do think they make crop bras, and it may help them not overeat as well because the bra will limit how big the crop gets. I'll bet you could find a way to make one at home. I think with this one you have, I would put her on wire with no bedding. See if you can massage the crop a few times a day. If it's not shrinking, she is not getting food. What color is her poo?

I have some hens that have an enlarged crop. I feed them scratch type grains with a pre-mix for vitamins plus a few other supplements. Some hens are fine. I only feed them about 4 oz each a day, which, with the number of my hens is just less that half a 5-gal bucket. They are free ranging (although lately I've had to deal with a fox, so they are fenced in) I've heard of the olive oil treatment, but not really sure about that...what's the best way to deal with this?

This just happened to us last night. Yesterday she was large breasted, asolated then died this morning. She was a Blue Splash Maran 7 1/2 weeks old.

Welcome to BYC. Sorry for your loss. It sounds like an impacted crop. You can start a new thread of your own, since this one is very old, for more info here, just click on “start a new thread” in the middle of the page:

This is a very old thread from 2013.

If you want folks to weigh in on what may have happened to your chick you should probably start a new thread.

Many people will see the age of this thread and not even click it.
