Breda Combless(Bd)?

Good question. I don't know what Bd/Bd without D^v would look like. The nostrils would be different though.

For comb genetics take a look at the-coop.org

Not much research anymore.

D^v in heterozygous configuration (D^v/d+) would give you exactly that buttercuplike comb!
D^v purebreed would look as expected; rosecomb is not required for this combtype.

On a side note, what would a comb with the genotype P/P,r+/r+,Dv/Dv bd/bd look like?

p+/p+,r+/r+,d+/d+,Bd+/Bd+

The D-gene has 2 mutations for v-shaped (D^v) and cup-shaped. Only homozygous D^v/D^v reduces the combflesh to the level of the V-comb.

Thanks Henk,

I haven’t had the opportunity to work with the breda comb (bd not br, my mistake). Are you saying that the D^v allele is required to reduce the combflesh of the breda comb - so that p+/p+, r+/r+, d+/d+, bd/bd produces a comb that is appreciably larger than p+/p+, r+/r+, D^v/D^v, bd/bd?

I am aware that there is believed to be three alleles at the D locus. I have worked with the D^v mutation a bit with my maiden rock bantams http://oneearthfarm.com/chickens/maidenrocks.html - which ideally will be P/P, R/R, D^v/D^v. All owe their D^v allele to a polish bantam hen (almost no comb), their P allele to an araucana bantam hen (almost no comb), and their rose comb allele to a large selection of sebright and hamburg bantams. Early on I have had full large buttercup type combs segregate out from this flock, and so have been given cause to wonder if there are indeed two separate duplex mutations rather than some other epistatic action causing the two distinctive duplex phenotypes. Something similar to the effect of He alleles on rose and single combs perhaps?

Can you recommend any current literature or studies on the subject of comb genetics? It has been a few years since I’ve dug into the literature on comb genetics, but I am guessing there has to be some new data available.

Dan

Dan,
The buttercup comb hens were R/R, D^v/d+ right? So does D^v produce the buttercup comb on both r+/r+ and R/R?

Interesting, I would love to see pictures. I have heard about buttercup combs with a "rose comb" in the center. Did any of your birds have this?

I believe this was drawn by Ross Simpson?

Really, "pretty ugly" well humpf ! I have 5 Breda and they are nothing if you ask me and it is fair to say you did not, but again if you asked me I would say, “ they are unequaled in elegance”. Yes they have large nostrils, are comb-less, with vulture like legs, and all but some how those features as described don’t add up to a Breda or convey their absolute beauty as strong powerful noble looking chicken. I will post some pictures of adolescent chickens. True they are not common looking but I think anyone for an eye for chickens can see their natural appeal, sheer elegance and rather noble carriage.

Respectfully indignant
