Our Buff Orp is SUPER friendly. Will jump up on our laps and sit there for half an hour. She's also becoming a very good layer, usually 6 or 7 days in a row. Eggs are still smallish but she's only been laying a month. The ragged looking barred rock is an egg machine, with very big eggs. She's slowed down a little over the last week or so, she might be molting. She's not the friendliest bird. It's all about the eating and laying for her. My EE is also very friendly, and a good layer. The SLW just started laying yesterday. But she is full of personality. She'll jump up on you if you have treats, but not really big on hanging around. What she is, though, is very, VERY noisy. She will sit on my porch and call for me. She might not like to be handled a lot, but she loves having humans around. She will make a crazy racket until you come outside and spend time with all of them. I like her a lot.

The light brahma, in the picture there, has not begun laying yet. But she's another that is very friendly, and will sit on your lap for long periods of time. She gets so relaxed the color just drains out of her face while you pet her. The speckled sussex is probably going to turn out like my barred rock...at least in personality. She's all about the eating and laying, though at this point, she seems like maybe a 4 a week layer.

The young ones I asked about are all very skittish. I don't think they were well taken care of before I bought them. They were all missing feathers and seemed to be lacking in nourishment. The guy had a crapload of chicks in a very confined area. I'm sure they'll warm up to us after a while.

But geez, to answer your question...I'd have to say that my EE and BO are my favorites...though the brahma is right up there too. We do have a nice diverse flock. Thank you for noticing. They are just as much our pets as they are providers of eggs. And luckily, they all get along very, very well. Even the young ones, who were just introduced last week after free ranging with the older ones but sleeping separately for over a month. Guess we lucked out!

I think Orps will be on my list for next time! Of my flock, I think the Brahmas are my faves although I love my EE. We had to replace our Wellie that died (had been one of my favorites before her passing) with a new one this spring. You may want to consider a Welsummer the next time to decide to expand your flock--the dark speckled eggs were always everyone's favorite, so pretty!

Good luck with your new girls, I am sure they will warm up to you once they pass thier teenager stage!

Yeah, I've been thinking about a Wellsummer or Maran, but my wife is talking naked neck something or other. I probably have room for a couple more, so maybe all three!

The rest we are all sure about. The red and gold one in the back ground is definitely a roo.

The black and white one next to him is a light brahma that hasn't begun laying, but is hen for sure.
