Hello....I picked up these two chickies a few weeks ago, being told that they were both Sapphire Gem pullets. Hmmmm.... what do you all think? The lighter one is the color of my other older SG, but those are pretty dark feathers on the other. Any thoughts? I didn't think there was that much variation, but what do I know...I've been doing this for about 12 weeks. Also, the lighter one--pullet or cockrel....its getting a tad bit pinker on the underside of its beak, but as a SG, since that is sex-linked, I didn't expect it to be an issue. These were not bought from a hatchery, so I can't really verify. Would love to hear your thoughts. They are 2 days short of 5 weeks old...or so I was told when I got them at 2 weeks. I don't have any better pictures....sorry. I was lucky to get this close to them!

Those don't look like saphies to me at all. Sapphire gems are also sex-linked chickens, so you should be able to tell by there color. I would look it up

I'm with you....not convinced they are Sapphies, as you say. But I got no idea where to start figuring out what they are, which is why I thought I would try this knowledgable crew. Its not a big deal...I will love them no matter what (maybe a bit less if the grey one is a cockrel...but we can have one rooster only), but my curiousity has been piqued. Not to mention understanding that when you buy chickens...you ain't always getting what you think you are. But as a chicken newbie buying chicks after a traumatic flock loss, I may have gotten taken for a ride. Good thing they are all cute. 😁

Thats a good outlook on this situation. I myself own two sappies and love them very much. I will try to find out what breed they are. Did you only get two?

I'm forgetting to reply to your answers KloieGrace--still learning forums. But, to answer your question, I got 8 chicks in total--3 Australorps, 3 Sapphire Gems, 1 Easter Egger, and one Speckled Sussex. The Australorps look pretty on point...speckled heads and tons of black feathers coming through. The other "SG" is very dark as well...a basic twin for the dark one in the photo.

I had 4 SGs from a hatchery. They were the sweetest. 3 were killed by a fox attack (along with the rest of the flock) save one of the SGs that managed to escape. She was very traumatized and not doing well alone (not surprised!) so I found a farm that had pullets about her age as well as 2 week old chicks. We got an Easter Egger pullet to be a companion for her till we can get these new ones integrated once they are out of the brooder. But I'm not really sure what I was sold now. 😂

I appreciate any help you can give. Like I said, it won't make a difference as to what happens to them, but I like to know what I have.

. Thanks!
