I posted these pics yesterday. So sorry for being redundant however, I just got off the phone with the breeder/lady who I bought this little one from. This first picture was taken on the 8th (day I got her). Was told she was about a week old maybe 8-10 days. She is supposed to be a Cuckoo Marans. Notice no white cuckoo barring. black legs. I called her today and she said there was absolutley no way she could be a Black Ameraucana. She then went on to tell me that she will go through her molting phases and color will change. Cuckoos don't have black legs. Correct me if I'm wrong. And every pic I've looked at of 1 week to 4 week old Cuckoos have the white cuckoo barring on their wing feathers. As well as not having black legs and feet. Is there anyway this little one can still be a cuckoo? Is this lady confused or blowing smoke up my butt?

Bellow taken 6/18/12 (roughly 2 1/2 - 3 weeks old)

Now please look at this link from BYC of a "Black Ameraucana" They look like twin sisters!!!

Notice the feet/legs from the link with a pic of my chicks legs and feet. I don't know how much it means but I'm really just holding out hope that there are some cuckoos that "wait awhile" to show off their "true colors". If anyone has any wisdom on this breed or can point me in the right direction... Please let me know

The chick has a single comb = not Ameraucana. The coloring is off for a cuckoo marans. Perhaps a throwback?

Black Ameraucana are just that pure black with no coloring unlike your chick which has brown on its feathers. maybe it has black marans in but that brown all over is throwing any marans right out the window

someone can correct me if im wrong but i have never seen a marans with that coloration...did you go and see her flock?

I sent her the same pics last night before calling her. She is not budging on the fact it's a Cuckoo and just kept saying it takes time for the "real colors" to show. I'm new at this and these are my first chicks since I've been an adult. I saw lots of her flock but didn't really watch or examine them. She had Ameraucanas, RIR, Leghorns, Barred Rocks, and some others. She just walked us to where the "chicks" were being kept...

It does NOT take time for the cuckoo colors to show. They come in with the wing feathers immediately, same as with Barred Rocks. It's definitely not an Ameraucana, either.

A throwback means a gene from way back in the lines may have popped up.

Ok, so if she is a "throwback" does that mean she is still considered a Cuckoo? Mutated Cuckoo? lol

We can't know that it's a throwback, not for sure. The "breeder" could have made a mistake. I put it in quotes because a true breeder of Cuckoo Marans would know the color does not take time to come in. If it has no cuckoo barring, you can't call it Cuckoo.

Does she have other color Marans? Could be a rooster jumped the fence or she put in a wrong egg. It happens-we're all human.

To be honest. She claimed she had cuckoos. Her website claims she is working with Bev Davis, Green Fire Farms, and Wade Jean lines. But I also had questions about my Welsummer from her being a Roo that she feather sexed on site and my "barred rock" with pink legs and Cuckoo markings. You can see my other posts here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...and-cuckoo-is-black-sexlink-help#post_9173222. I don't know what to think anymore. Look at my Welsummer that she still says is a pullet: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/678996/4-week-old-welsummer-pullet-or-roo/10#post_9175621. I feel like I'm in a big mess! lol. Here is what I was suppost to get from this lady: 2 Ameraucanas, 1 Barred Rock,1 Cuckoo Marans, 1 white orpington, and 1 welsummer. This is driving me crazy! lol

and on top of it, I came to her as a novice and asking questions very gently and it seemed like she was getting offended as if I was questioning her chicken skills.
