Okay, so this little guy is between 6 and 7 weeks old, and I feel very certain he’s a he. Comb and wattle development is really far along for that age, and he’s massive compared to all the other chicks.

He came from a bin at a large farm store that was labeled RIR, and the other chick from that bin is feathering out correctly. The other bins at the store were Isa Brown, Colorpack, and Barred Rock.

I suppose he could be a Colorpack, as they are a hybrid sort of like Easter Eggers and can display a wide variety of feather patterns... his neck markings are similar to a few of my older Color packs. But, he’s far too light in color to be any type of RIR. He’s Buff, but darker than a Buff Orpington(and without the color variation between the neck and body). He’s also just not built right, as far as Buff Orpingtons go. The feather density and texture is different, much more sleek.

I’ll try to get some better pictures, he was a bit squirmy this morning. It doesn’t hugely matter to me, but I’m curious and would like to know!

Thanks guys! Yes, @FuzzyCritters beat me to it... they’re just EEs with Legbar genes instead of Amerucana. I have three adult hens of that breed, and a fourth that got killed by a hawk or owl last winter. I also have two new chicks. All look very very different, as far as feathering, and 4 of the 6 have the feathered heads like legbars.

I didn’t really think of Colorpack until yesterday when I noticed his neck spots. All my Colorpacks have had them to some degree.

I might make a post somewhere about them. I’ve seen them in multiple stores here the last few years, including both small Ag stores and TSC.... but hardly anyone seems to have heard of them! They are a great breed. Docile, sweet, hardy to hot and cold, fantastic layers, and give gorgeous eggs. They even continued laying about 3 eggs per week in the dead of winter(zone 5 here), with no supplemental heat or light. If this Roo has a similar temperament when he’s older, he’ll be a great flock guardian for all my girls!
