What birds (breed) can i keep with rhode island reds looking for a good layer but want 1 or 2 in my flock that
lays nice coloured eggs

Just about any breed will work. The more ornamental breeds can be hard to keep in mixed flocks because they can be a prime target for picking and/or bullying (especially those who have feathering that impedes vision, etc), but standard laying breeds are all pretty equal on mixing.
