Breeder has asked us not to neuter pup -- advice please?

I had my male neutered because he was spraying my couch.. (he was 14 months old.)..
it was baad... he stopped after he was fixed.
So..spraying would be my only concern...
Although not every un-neutered male will spray... its not a chance i'm willing to take again.

Talk to your breeder about what her stud dog is like. Most intact male ES aren't a problem at all because ES are so intent on pleasing their owners. Females, especially more than one, can be a problem during heat cycles due to the dominant nature of the breed, but you don't need to worry about that for obvious reasons. I have dealt with an ES/Rough Collie bloodline that sometimes produces dogs who have to be neutered because they're impossible to keep off the ladies (I own one, as a matter of fact), but I've never heard of this in purebred ES.

And yes, duke out some sort of agreement between yourself and the breeder balancing health testing, OFA/PennHIP, and stud fees. Get it put in the puppy contract, if they have one... make them write one for your pup, if not. It's much better to think this stuff out beforehand and get it in writing!

It sounds like there was a previous house-peeing-dog that used to live there and your poodle was trying to cover the other dog's scent

That's the thing...none of our other dogs had EVER marked in the house. EVER. Thunder never had an accident in the house until he was MUCH older and long after Pogo moved out.

We'd never had a male dog before Thunder, so no idea what else it could have been?

So you are saying that you built the house and knew for certain that NO animal had ever marked in it before Pogo?? Coz it's my understanding that the dogs can smell the proteins? in the urine for years later....especially if the dog "wants" to smell them

I have a female dog who smells of every single leaf or blade of grass, and marks EVERYTHING when we go on walks (not in the house though) and a lazy male who just takes cues from her and only marks if she does

If you walk them separately he might pee twice, where she'd try to stop 100 times, and no there are no urinary health issues, she doesn't do it at home....lol

I am a show dog breeder also. When I have asked a home to keep a dog in tact for me. It is a kind thing for them to do.... but it is no way mandatory.
It is easy for a breeder to fall in love with a pup and not want to let go. Selling our precious babies is heart breaking..... But keeping another dog is not usually an option so instead we try to find a home that we can work with as a team. If you feel like you can become good friends with this breeder... i say go for it. If you dont, its best to not get involved.

email me privately if you have more questions. [email protected] or [email protected]

if your interested...

my first suggestion would be to ask her about health testing, ask her if she would be willing to pay for the ofa, and anything else nessicary...
if she plans on you showing him she should also be esponsible for show fees ect.

if you are considering this you want a good contract stating what shes paying for to use your dog (ie health test, stud fee ect) as well as your rights to neuter if theres an issue, or you just want to or after she uses him for one litter...

in terms of behavioural, honestly if you can keep the marking in check, (some males will mark, in those cases a belly band might be a choice) others dont mark in the house. and are solid in training, ive found little difference in the behaviour of an intact vs neutered male.
a breeding or 2 shouldnt change his personality at all or make any difference to health.
the problems can come when you have an intact dog whos not used as a stud due to increase of prostate issues.

It's entirely possible that some dog did pee somewhere in the house 26 years before my parents moved in, but once they moved in, no dogs had ever messed in the house.

If anything, I'd expect him to mark repeatedly in the apartment. There's no telling how many dogs have come through here...no telling how many have messed. Yet there's been no peeing in here.

Ask the breeder to draw some straws of semen for cold storage so your plans for neutering won't effected.

If your intact dog is allowed to roam outside he WILL take off after any scent of a female in heat, possibly getting hurt in the process.
