Breeder questions

It is sort of strange that I tried to get a breeder to answer this question and you're the only one to reply and it's been two days. I hope somebody sees this thread and tells us soon. I want Orpingtons.

If we keep talking back and forth it will keep the thread at the top of the "new posts" and someone will eventually answer!

I got into chickens about 4 years ago. It started out as a 4h project and has gone so much further. My child who wanted to do this wanted so many different breeds and varieties. But we started out with 1 breed 1 variety for him to show. We got them from a breeder. Over the years I have ordered hatchery chickens and they were not show quality chickens. So if you want to show first find a local show and attend it talk to the exhibitors and ask questions especially the kids they love to share their knowledge with everyone. No hatchery sells show quality birds with my experience. Prices for birds will vary you can pay as little as $2.50 for a chick to as high as $25 and it all depends on the breed and variety. The more rare it is the more money. As in laying best everyone has different preferences. I like the Australorps because they lay in the heat just fine. I am in Florida NPIP if you want to sell is very important to have and easy to get call the local Dept of Agriculture and set up an appointment for the inspector to come out and take samples from your birds you will usually receive the card in the mail in about 30 days with your own NPIP number. As long as you monitor your birds when it comes to selling chicks as purebred last thing you want is for the baby to grow as an Australorp and you sold them an orpington. If you want to establish a breed I would contact the APA and see what kind of documentation you need to keep to establish a breed. Our project here involves a breed that is on the brink of extinction and we want to get them back up and have people see more of these birds and all their varieties at the shows not just 2. We are trying to establish a Sumatra flock. We did try the many different breeds and when I could not find breeders I ordered from hatcheries and those birds either did not place or got white ribbons at the shows. If you free range be extremely careful of predators this past spring I nearly lost my entire flock to predators. On the hunt to rebuild
