Me too! I'm still trying to figure out if the eggs they're laying now are fertilized or not and not really feeling like I'm getting the hang of it, but I figured why not try to incubate 4 next month! It makes me kinda feel like a mad scientist.

They got their names because the rooster just showed up on my grandparents' front porch one weekend in October (a good month for rooster, apparently!). We couldn't find his owner, I'm a gigantic nerd for the Iliad and the Odyssey, he was lost from his home, it all kinda fit! After that, naming the first round of hens was pretty easy (all female characters from The Odyssey) and the my next round of chicks that should be delivered in May will continue the how Greek theme. Because I'm also OCD and I can't break an established theme. :D I'm pretty much a nerd in general and name everything after my favourite fictional characters.
I wanted to name mine after the NCIS characters, but alas, they all had personalities or features that deemed it necessary to change plans, or my son overruled me. lol He wanted to name the first naked neck chick after "David" Michaelangelo's naked statue...lol. (It's a cute story.) I did get to name my one silkie mix -Gibbs though. He had a grayish sheen as a chick and it fit. Unfortunetly, if it turns out to be a roo, he'll have to transfer to a different branch...lol

Ah! Gibbs! That's fantastic. I love that show. And as an artist and former art history major, I definitely like David for a name. :)

That doesn't suprise me, first thing I saw your profile pic all I could think of was Abby!! lol the David thing was hysterical. We homeschool and had an intro study to Italy for kindergarten last year and in one of our books it was of course talking about the art and had a full page picture of the statue. My son was appalled that he was naked...but it stuck. When I yelled for him to come look at the "Naked Neck" that had just hatched he looked at it and said, "We should name it David!" When I asked why you said "Cause it's a naked neck." Of course it took me a while to get him to explain what "naked" and "David" had to do with each other. Finally he just sighed and said, "You, know the naked statue, his name is David." lol So we have a turken roo named David. I did tell him if it turned out to be a hen we were going to say it "Da-veed" As in Ziva David....lol

I have no clue what that is but I love the names lol! And I'm a total nerd about a ton of stuff so lol!

And I here that Sebrights have a low fertility rate would you say that's true? Their suppose to be a bit challenging as breeders

The Odyssey of Homer and Greek Mythology. I remember enjoying greek mythology in school, but I must admit, I remember very little of it. lol It's one of the things I am looking foreward to teaching my son though and refreshing my memory.

I have to go look up what a Sebright looks like. Not familiar with that one.

Well, like I said, I've been trying to read the yolks for the past week and I can't tell the difference between a fertilized/not fertilized egg yet. The first two I got I shared here and got answers ranging from one or the other were fertilized or both. He's definitely been mating with them but beyond that I can't be 100% sure until I try incubating next month. :)

I just googled sebrights. I absolutely love the black and whit ones!! The brownish and black ones look like the markings on my polish mixes. Beautiful birds.

He really is! When we found him, I thought he was a statue! He may be smaller than his ladies, but he definitely takes his rooster protection duties seriously. It's adorable. :)
