Hi there. I love my barnyard mixes. I have a question about breeding. These are my pullets (I think. They're only 12-weeks.) I love them. Their color variety and demeanor. How would I choose a roo to help continue the color genes? In particular I'd like to recreate the red beard.

Thanks!

I have no clue about your question I just wanted to say, that red beard is the most adorable thing ever! She is going to be a gorgeous hen! They all are, thst is just so unusual looking!

Very pretty birds. I don't know anything about the genetics of the red beard, but would choose roosters that either have it or come from lines which have it.
I am breeding for several things in my mixes, among them egg color, age they start laying and size and number of eggs. I found if I choose a rooster from a hen who has what I want, he passes it on very well.

Update on the chicks. The older ones are 8 weeks old now! My sexing was a bit off as I have at least 1 rooster still. Also had a hen hatch 6 chicks 3 weeks ago and all of them are doing good as well.
